Successful Relations Require Successful Communication
February 07, 2012 | Posted by Administrator

When asked, the majority of people say their number one concern is health — and their second priority is getting along with people. Yet, communication with others is one of our most important skills — and one that can ultimately affect every other aspect of our lives — including our health.

Improved relationships between spouses, parents and children, between friends or colleagues all depend on good communication. It has been said ‘He who can communicate well, has the whole world walking with him — he who can’t, walks alone.’

Unfortunately relationship skills aren’t really taught in schools. Your basic skill level in this area depends on your role models, (in most cases, your parents and close family members).

Imagine being able to master successful communication? How much more fulfilling and meaningful would your life be?

No one has perfect communication skills, but they can be improved, if you’re prepared to take the time to learn.

Here are just a few of the things you can put into practice today to improve your relationships:

Avoid Arguments

Arguing can be very destructive to your relationships with others.

Does anyone ever really win an argument? Even if you prove your “opponent” wrong (feeding your own ego), the other person may harbour resentment, or bear a grudge towards you long after the argument is over.

When you are tempted to get involved in an argument, remember the old saying: “Be careful when fighting with a swine as you will both get dirty wrestling in the mud — BUT the swine will enjoy it.”

In any potential conflict, try to assess the situation from the other person’s viewpoint. “You can attract more bees with honey than you can with vinegar”, so be gentle in your responses.

If you must correct someone, start out with sincere appreciation for their particular view, or a definite strength they may have, before stating your case.

Show Your Appreciation

Would you starve the people you love most of food? Of course you wouldn’t!

Why then, do we let them go without appreciation or praise (something they crave as much as food)?

Love and acceptance are essential for nourishment of the self-esteem and soul. When communicating effectively, we need to be hearty in approval and lavish in (genuine) praise.

The sweetest sounding word to anyone is his or her name, spoken with affection.

Take Action

Allow yourself time to grow in this area, but remember, this glimpse, this dash, we call life is over in a blink (just ask an elderly person how quick their life has been).

The best intentions are shallow until expressed with appropriate action. So, take action today and tell the people close to you that you love them at every opportunity.
