Environment

There are numerous simple actions we can take everyday to ensure we are not passing the true costs of our lifestyle to the next generation.

This doesn’t mean you have to make major changes to your lifestyle — all you need to do is make continuous, incremental changes to your everyday habits.

Here are three areas where a few small changes can make all the difference:

Reduce Waste

To reduce waste you can:

  • Reduce your consumption. (How often do we buy things on impulse and never end up using them? Everything we buy requires resources for its production; needs to be transported; and must be disposed of when we are finished with it.)
  • Say NO to plastic carry bags.
  • Rethink bottled water. (Australia has clean, drinking water available from our taps, which can safely be used to fill a reusable bottle.)
  • Recycle wherever possible.
  • Support recycling by purchasing products made from recycled materials.
  • When shopping, avoid products with excessive packaging.
  • Compost food scraps.

Reduce Pollution

To reduce pollution you can:

  • Minimise car usage. Consider alternatives such as public transport, walking or cycling.
  • Buy locally made. This supports local industry and reduces the distance products have travelled to reach you.
  • Buy certified organic products.
  • Reduce your use of chemicals around the home and in the garden.

Save Resources

To save resources you can:

  • Install water saving devices around the home.
  • Install rainwater tanks.
  • Design your garden with water efficiency and local wildlife in mind.
  • Sweep paths and concrete areas instead of hosing them down.
  • Turn off lights that are not in use.
  • Use your washing line instead of the tumble dryer.
